The Milestones of Life
What is a Birthday,
I used to say.
Is it any different
Than any other day?
It’s a mile marker
Through our whole life.
Some we remember
For the rest of our life.
But, most are plain
And soon forgotten.
No need at all
To do any struttin’
The major ones --
We do remember:
The first day of school,
At start of September.
And, few years later,
High school and college,
The kiss, the vote,
The car, and knowledge.
A drink at a bar --
With new found friends.
And finally in bed,
The long night ends.
A dependable job,
Is what we need.
A loving family,
With children, indeed!
We work so hard,
To earn our pay.
The mileage markers,
Just keep slipping away!
A graduation here, --
A wedding there, --
An auto accident,
Had given us a scare.
The grandchildren come,
What a welcome joy!
As long as healthy,
Whether a girl or a boy!
Finally retirement –
That we must face.
It signals an end,
To the “old” rat race.
We sell our home.
At about sixty-two,
And move to Florida,
Like some people do.
We join some clubs,
To have some fun
And play some golf
Right under the sun.
It’s doctors now --
That we must seek.
The bones are crackling;
We are feeling weak.
It’s marker seventy --
That we just passed.
How many more
Will this body last?
They’re speeding by
At a much faster clip.
I am not as steady,
And my feet did slip!
But nothing broken,
When I took the fall.
It was on the lawn,
And not in the hall.
We smelled the roses,
I have you know.
When God calls for us,
We are ready to go!
